Profile
Abid Ali had the feet of a sprinter, the energy of a marathon runner and the will of a decathlete, but his misfortune was that he was born 20 years too early. His game was made to order for one-day cricket: he bowled brisk medium-pace, fielded outstandingly, and was a busy lower-order batsman who ran between the wickets as if on invisible skates. On his Test debut against Australia at Brisbane in 1967-68, he took a memorable 6 for 55, but Abid Ali was forever destined to play choirboy to India's famous spin quartet. In the same series, he scored 78 and 81 at Sydney, a performance that earned high praise from Jack Fingleton, the noted Australian cricketer-turned-journalist. His career ended abruptly when he was at his peak, after he had top-scored with 70 from No. 7 and taken 2 for 35 against New Zealand in the 1975 World Cup. A bizarre postscript to this premature curtailment came when Abid Ali had the dubious pleasure of reading his own obituary after Farokh Engineer mistakenly announced his death on the air.
----------
"Kya bole?" (What did you say)? Syed Abid Ali is credited with asking this classic question of GR Viswanath, when they met three quarters of the way down the pitch, with GRV rooted to the spot and repeatedly shouting "No!" at the top of his voice, and Abid still charging down regardless for a run.
This no doubt apocryphal story of an incident in a Test match was told with much relish by the Karnataka batsman, at the expense of the Hyderabad all rounder, who had a reputation for getting mixed up in run outs. The reason was simple: Abid Ali was about twice as swift between wickets as most other batsmen and was always on the lookout for quick singles. He was once stumped off the first ball he faced, because he had taken off for a single even before playing the ball.
Abid Ali was a genuine character among cricketers, an original in many ways. For instance, he set high standards of physical fitness for a generation of cricketers known for its lackadaisical attitude to such matters. The punishing regimen of training he followed was often the subject of anecdotes, wildly exaggerated and embellished, but perfect entertainment in the evening after a long day at the ground.
Few cricketers exploited their God-given talent better. Abid Ali was an honest-to-goodness medium pacer, who could also bat aggressively, but look where it got him. He made a sensational Test debut in 1967 when he took 6 for 55 against Australia at Brisbane, following it up with two brilliant innings of 78 and 81 opening the innings in the Sydney Test. He practised his fielding with such devotion that he became an acrobatic close-in fielder and an athletic one in the outfield, with an unerring, flat throw. He developed enough variations in his military medium pace bowling to keep the batsmen constantly guessing. He also had the knack of making the ball skid on most wickets. He was demonstrative in an age when most bowlers tended to hide their emotions. His appeals to God when he beat the edge, and his sardonic grins at batsmen blessed by the Lord - unfairly in Abid's opinion - were sights to see and remember.
I was one of many younger cricketers to benefit from his encouragement. His way of helping me become a better off spinner was to hit my best deliveries repeatedly out of the ground during net practice, so that I learnt to adjust my flight when confronted with batsmen who could do that to me in matches. Even in matches in which we were pitted against each other, the lessons continued, ruining my bowling analysis in the process. Of course, when I got him out, he always had a perfect explanation for the accident that had nothing to do with good bowling!
When Abid Ali took over the Hyderabad captaincy from the cerebral and celebrated ML Jaisimha, he was determined to make a strong impression. He was solemnity personified as he addressed the team just before taking the field in his first Ranji Trophy match as captain. "Boys, I want you to play tight, mean cricket. I want us to give not LESS than 40 runs in the first hour." He had meant to say "not MORE than 40 runs," and the giggles and suppressed guffaws that interrupted him, spoiled his speech somewhat, but it was a happy Hyderabad team that took the field that morning.

Profile
"There is no better bowler in the world today than Amar Singh,'' said Len Hutton in an informal chat with pressmen at Madras in 1970. It was 34 years since the legendary England opening batsman had faced the Indian medium pace bowler while playing for Yorkshire. And it is the perfect tribute to Amar Singh that Hutton still remembered the hard time that the Indian, then a member of the 1936 Indian team, gave him. Another England great Wally Hammond described Amar Singh's bowling as "he came off the pitch like the crack of doom". Indeed, Amar Singh, along with Md Nissar was the first great Indian bowler for his accuracy, stamina and ability to make the ball move alarmingly off the air or cut it devastatingly off the pitch. He played in all the seven Tests before the war. In the first Test in 1932 he took four wickets and hit an attacking 51, coming in at No 9. Against England in 1933-34, he was the country's best bowler taking four for 106 off 54.5 overs in the second Test at Calcutta. In the final Test at Madras, in the absence of Nissar, he had to work overtime and rose to the occasion with a bag of seven for 86 off 44.4 overs in the first innings. Going in at No. 4, he scored a hard hitting 48. Amar Singh was however at his best in England where the conditions suited him. In 1932, he took 111 wickets (20.78) and made 641 runs (22.89) in the first class matches. By 1936 he was a popular Lancashire League professional and was released only for a few games for the Indian touring team. In the first Test, he took 6 for 35 in the first innings. In the second Test he again displayed his batting prowess by hitting an unbeaten 48 to help India draw the game. In the final Test at the Oval he scored a valuable 44 going in at No. 4 thus proving beyond doubt that he could be classified as an allrounder. At home, he was at his best against Lord Tennyson's team in 1937-38 when he bagged 36 wickets (16.66) in the five unofficial Tests. In a short but brilliant Ranji Trophy career for Western India and Nawanagar he took 105 wickets at 15.56 apiece.
He died in 1940 at the age of 29 after a fever contracted after a long swim developed into typhoid.
--------
Ladha Amar Singh was one of India's finest new ball bowlers ever and with Mohammed Nissar he formed a formidable opening combination for India in the 1930's. He could swing the ball either way but it was his fast movement off the wicket that was lethal. A crowdpuller with both bat and ball, there was never a dull moment when he was in the thick of the action. Tragically he died of pneumonia on this day in 1940 when he was a mere 29 years old.
Growing up in the town of Jamnagar, Amar Singh played for the now defunct Nawanagar in the Ranji Trophy and his abilities were first spotted by the eagle eye of his princely ruler, the Jamsaheb of Nawanagar, Ranjitsinhji himself, in a trial match in Delhi before the 1932 tour of England. Amar Singh finished the tour with a remarkable 111 wickets at 20.78 but his finest exhibition with the ball came at Lord's in 1936 after being released by Colne, for whom he played in the Lancashire League, for the three Test series. He grabbed 6-35 to skittle out England for 134, which was the first time in Test cricket that India led on first innings.
In the 1933-34 series at Madras, deprived of the support of Nissar, he put in another hostile effort that netted figures of 7/86 in a marathon 44.4 overs in England's first innings. With no other strike bowlers in the side apart from Nissar, Amar Singh was often used as a workhorse, being bowled into the ground. At Calcutta in the same series he turned his arm over for a staggering 54.5 overs, taking 4/106.
Lord Tennyson's team which visited India for five unofficial Tests in 1937-38 found Amar Singh a real handful as he repeatedly ran through them to finish with 36 wickets in the series at 16.66. Indeed Joe Hardstaff jnr, a classy bat who came on that tour, rated him as the best bowler in the world at the time after Bill O'Reilly.
Amar Singh was also a strokeful albeit inconsistent late order batsman and to him goes the honour of making India's first Test half century, at Lords in 1932. A sizzling 131 not out batting at No.10 against Lancashire in 1932 was evidence of his dangerous striking ability. A genuine all rounder he was the first player to complete the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in the Ranji Trophy. His brother Ladha Ramji also represented India and was even quicker than Amar Singh but without the discipline and control of the latter. Amar was a close friend of Vijay Merchant and both named their sons after each other.
We shall leave the last word to Wally Hammond, whom he bowled for 35 in India's first Test in 1932. According to Hammond, then in the prime of his abilities, Amar Singh was "as dangerous an opening bowler as I have ever seen, coming off the pitch like the crack of doom."

Yusuf Pathan first made his mark as a hard-hitting batsman and offspinner for the Baroda Under-16 team in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 1999-2000. His impressive showings saw him quickly climb the rungs to the Baroda U-19 and the West Zone U-19 sides. He made his Ranji debut against Saurashtra in 2001-02, but it wasn't until the 2004-05 season, by when younger brother Irfan Pathan was donning the national colours, that he established himself as a regular in the Baroda squad. Pathan ended the 2004-05 season as Baroda's fourth-highest scorer and third-highest wicket-taker.
His ability to score runs quickly - he had the highest strike rate in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy - and impressive performances in the Deodhar Trophy and Twenty20 domestic tournament in the 2006-07 season was rewarded with a spot in India's squad for the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa.
Pathan's impressive showing for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League in 2008 - 435 runs with four fifties at a strike-rate of 179 - earned him an ODI call-up for the tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup in Pakistan. He recorded the fastest fifty of the IPL's first season - off 21 balls against the Deccan Chargers - and his dazzling all-round show in the final was instrumental in Rajasthan's triumph. A run of patchy scores in India's limited-overs squads saw Pathan dropped, but he replied with emphatically with a 190-ball unbeaten double century - his second in the match - as West Zone sealed the highest first-class chase ever in the 2010 Duleep Trophy final.
Hashim Amla ----- BOWLERO PAR NAYA HAMLA

Full name Hashim Mahomed Amla
Born March 31, 1983, Durban, Natal
Current age 26 years 324 days
Major teams South Africa, Dolphins, Essex, KwaZulu-Natal
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Right-arm medium, Right-arm offbreak
An elegant, stroke-filled player blessed with the temperament to make the most of his talent, Hashim Amla is the first South African of Indian descent to reach the national squad - his grandparents migrated from Gujarat - and he shares the penchant for wristy leg-side flicks that ooze off his bat. His elevation to the South Africa side was a poorly kept secret after he reeled off four centuries in his first eight innings of the 2004-05 season, after being appointed captain of the Dolphins (formerly Natal) at the tender age of 21. His older brother by four years, Ahmed, made his first-class debut two seasons before Hashim, but there is little doubt that the younger Amla is the better player. He is also a devout Muslim whose requests to have logos promoting alcohol removed from his playing gear have been successful so far. Amla toured New Zealand with the South African Under-19 team in 2000-01, he captained South Africa at the 2002 Under-19 World Cup, and after starring for the A team, made his Test debut against India in 2004-05. He was not an instant success, with serious questions emerging about his technique as he mustered 36 runs in four innings against England later that season. When he was handed a second chance he made it count with 149 against New Zealand at Cape Town, helping guide South Africa to a draw. He remained a consistent performer, if not as prolific as South Africa would like, with fifties against Pakistan in 2007, but saved his best for the following tour to India where he racked up 307 runs in the three Tests. It included a majestic 159 in Chennai, his second score of 150 or more. A quiet man, there is no doubting his hunger.
He remains a candidate to become South Africa's second non-white Test captain after Ashwell Prince, and possesses the most impressive beard in all the game.
